Nutrition for Adolescents Initiative
Current Situation: In Tanzania, especially in rural regions such as Pwani, Lindi, and parts of Dar es Salaam, many adolescents face significant nutritional challenges that affect their growth, health, and academic performance. Malnutrition, including both undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, is widespread. According to recent reports, about 30% of Tanzanian children under five suffer from stunting, and many adolescents face iron and vitamin A deficiencies that hinder their ability to focus in school and perform well academically. These nutritional gaps are further exacerbated by limited access to nutritious foods and a lack of awareness among parents and educators about healthy eating practices. As adolescence is a critical period for growth, poor nutrition during this stage has long-term effects, impacting physical development, cognitive function, and overall well-being.
Recognizing these challenges, the Nutrition for Adolescents Initiative was established to improve the nutritional status of young people in these regions. The Initiative aims to enhance nutrition education, increase access to healthy foods, and provide essential health screenings to identify deficiencies early, helping adolescents achieve better health outcomes and academic success.

Our Impact
Since its launch, TASI’s Nutrition for Adolescents initiative has reached over 500 adolescents in rural areas across Dar es Salaam, Pwani, and Lindi. In Dar es Salaam, TASI conducted monthly health camps screening over 100 adolescents, identifying 75 cases of nutritional deficiencies (such as iron and vitamin A), and providing supplements and dietary counseling. In Pwani, the project partnered with 3 schools, reaching over 300 students, offering nutritional education programs, and training 65 parents and educators on how to promote healthy eating in their communities.
In Lindi, TASI conducted nutrition workshops and health screenings for 300 adolescents and 150 families, helping to improve school attendance and academic performance. Adolescents reported feeling more energetic and focused in school after receiving support and education about healthy diets. These efforts have also contributed to reducing rates of anemia, stunting, and other nutrition-related health issues, while improving the overall health and academic outcomes of adolescents in these areas.
By focusing on local partnerships and community engagement, TASI is not only addressing immediate nutritional deficiencies but also laying the groundwork for sustainable, long-term improvements in adolescent health and nutrition across rural Tanzania.
